Andy Dunkley (1942-2011)

We have just been made aware of the untimely death of longstanding band acquaintance and ally Andy Dunkley – also known as ‘The Livin’ Jukebox’. He started his career as a roadie then moved on to a DJing in the late Sixties. He became the resident DJ at the Roundhouse in the early 70s and also collaborated with Hawkwind amongst others.

It was in his role at the Roundhouse that he first came into contact with The Stranglers during their earliest appearances there. Andy’s ties to the band strengthened over the next few years and he eventually tour managed the band for a period around 1980. More recently, it was Andy who introduced the band’s historic return to the Roundhouse in 2007. Sadly, he was also scheduled to DJ at the band’s forthcoming convention in November.

He famously introduced an early Stranglers’ gig with the words:

“Here’s a band you’ll be queueing up to see in three months time!”
