Following the amazing success of Rattus & Heroes, the release of Black and White would be the real acid test of whether the band had survived the year that punk broke. With its varied lyrical subjects, musical diversity and distinctive sound, it further distanced the band from their punk peers. John Robb would later describe it as the ‘first post punk album’. Following its release, the album stormed up the UK charts, peaking at number two.
